Tommy Fleetwood continued his brilliant season with glory at the inaugural DP World India Championship.

Starting the final day two shots behind Saturday’s leader Keita Nakajima, Fleetwood shot a stunning seven-under 65 on the final day to claim victory.

After birdying the opening par 5, Fleetwood did drop a shot on the next hole as Nakajima, Daniel Hillier and Joost Luiten looked to put the pressure on.

But Europe’s Ryder Cup hero was faultless for the rest of the day, producing four birdies in a row from the seventh hole to the tenth to put himself in control.

He then navigated the tricky conditions at Delhi Golf Club well down the closing stretch to beat Nakajima by two shots.

Fleetwood, who won the Tour Championship to claim FedEx Cup glory on the PGA Tour in August, has now claimed nine professional worldwide titles.

And the 34-year-old from Merseyside revealed his son Frankie was the driving force behind his victory.

He said: “Another win feels great.

“We were at home last week and we were driving the buggy playing golf together and he just said randomly – ‘Do you know what you’ve never done? You’ve never won a tournament and then I’ve been able to run onto the 18th green’.

“I had that written down all week. It was just another opportunity really.

“There’s going to be many more times where I hopefully get the chance to do that, but that was all day today what I had in my mind.

“Could I put myself in a position where I can actually make that moment happen? It’s just one of those little things.

After a well-publicised string of near-misses in America, Fleetwood’s breakthrough win came in August at East Lake as he dominated the Tour Championship.

That victory also saw him become the new FedEx Cup champion and he followed it up by starring for Europe in their Ryder Cup win at Bethpage Black.

Fleetwood claimed the most points of any player in New York as Europe secured their memorable win.

Fleetwood will now hope to continue his fine form at the DP World Tour’s upcoming play-off events.

The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at Yas Links gets underway on November 6 before the season-ending DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates starts a week later.

Back in India, Fleetwood’s Ryder Cup team-mate Shane Lowry secured a tie for third at 18-under while Viktor Hovland chipped in for eagle on the last hole to finish a shot behind.

Rory McIlroy ended the week in T26 on 11-under but enjoyed his time in New Delhi, producing a moment of magic on Sunday.
