As Diwali celebrations officially get underway in Waterloo Region, cities and municipalities are reminding everyone of local firework bylaws.
In Waterloo, fireworks can be set off between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on both Monday Oct. 20 and Tuesday Oct. 21.
In Kitchener, fireworks are also permitted between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., but only on Oct. 20.
In Cambridge, they can be set off from dusk until 11 p.m.
No matter where celebrations take place, fireworks can only be used on private property and not on public spaces, including school zones and parks, and only those who are 18 years and older.
Safety tips include having a bucket of water for used fireworks, not to use them during windy conditions, not relighting any ones that didn’t go off and not using them while under the influence.
Diwali, also known as “Deepavali” or “the festival of lights” runs for five days this year, starting Oct. 20. It is the most important holiday of the year for Hindus around the world and takes place depending on the Hindu lunar calendar.
Anyone found to be in violation of local bylaws can be subject to fines, which can be as high as $1,500 for a first-time offence.
