While it’s not uncommon for screenplays to surface after a film’s release, it’s rare for a director of del Toro’s caliber to make his script available to the public so close to its debut. The release provides a behind-the-scenes look at the filmmaker’s signature blend of horror, mythology, and melancholy — themes that have defined his Oscar-winning career in films like “The Shape of Water” and “Pan’s Labyrinth.”

Del toro’s gothic reimagining of Shelley’s story stars Oscar Isaac as the brilliant scientist who defies the boundaries of life and death by creating a being from death’s material. His pitiful creation, played by Jacob Elordi, awakens not only with life, but with a consciousness that can’t be killed — and plaguing him with the existential crisis that confronts us all.

In his review of the film, Variety film critic Peter Debruge wrote that “this latest adaptation hews closer to the author’s intentions than any previous version put to screen.”

Del Toro had been developing a “Frankenstein” adaptation for decades before Netflix ultimately issued a greenlight. In Variety’s cover story for Venice Film Festival, the Oscar-winning director explained that, “The usual discourse of Frankenstein has to do with science gone awry. But for me, it’s about the human spirit. It’s not a cautionary tale: It’s about forgiveness, understanding and the importance of listening to each other.”

Netflix is giving “Frankenstein” a limited, awards-qualifying theatrical release on Oct. 17, with a streaming debut to follow on Nov. 7.
