There was a real ‘end of an era’ moment in Limerick hurling this week, with it being announced that longtime captain Declan Hannon had retired from inter-county duties after 15 years in green and white.
The Adare club man has amassed an incredible CV during that period. He captained Limerick in four All-Ireland final wins, as well as picking up a fifth medal in 2023 despite missing the final due to injury. He also had seven Munster medals and two All-Stars to his name.
Hannon has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, meaning the confirmation of his retirement at 32-years old did not come as a huge shock. However, the news has been met with an outpouring of well wishes from Limerick fans, including from his own wife.

For me and for a lot of people, it is the end of an incredible era and some of the most incredible days of my life…
I do just want to say the biggest congratulations to Declan Hannon on his retirement from inter-county hurling. If ever there was a day I could gloat, I could get away with doing it today…
He has had a phenomenal career as a hurler. Any team he has captained has won whatever competition they set out to do. This all started back in primary school in the early 00s…
He had many incredible years with the Limerick senior hurling team, memories that I feel it is impossible to pick a highlight from. We’ll be reminiscing on highlights for the rest of our lives and we’re only 32-years old.
What I do want to say on record today, and nationally while I can and have this special opportunity, is that it has been the joy of my life to be on this journey with you Declan.
If I could turn back time and do it all again, I would do it in a heartbeat.
A fantastic tribute for a genuine GAA legend.
