The heartbreaking reason why Seattle Kraken defenseman Brandon Montour took a leave of absence from the club was revealed on Saturday.Seattle Kraken defenseman Brandon Montour is back with his team after taking a leave of absence, and he revealed the sad reason why he was away.

He unfortunately lost his brother Cameron Montour at just 34 years old because of complications from ALS, a disease that causes progressive weakness and atrophy of muscles.

Cameron began exhibiting symptoms of the illness in 2021, and unfortunately passed away on Monday surrounded by his family.

He battled hard … he was at home battling right until Monday, when it happened. He was smiling right until the end. I’m trying to honour him; I do the best I can every single day regardless of whose here or not. Nothing like that changes, but he’s watching down and that’s all I can ask. – Brandon Montour

Kraken head coach Lane Lambert said that the support for Montour from the rest of the team remains strong.

It’s important for him to get back into the groove of the game and maybe take his mind off of it a little bit. We feel for him and we’ll continue to support [him]. – Lane Lambert

So far this year, Montour has 4 assists in as many games played.

Brandon Montour is in His 2nd Year With the Seattle Kraken

Taken with the 55th overall pick by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Montour began his career with the team until he was traded in 2019 to the Buffalo Sabres for Brendan Guhle and a 1st round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

Soon, he was on the move again to the Florida Panthers, where his career began to excel. Eventually, he helped the Panthers win the Stanley Cup for the 1st time in team history as part of consecutive appearances in the SCF.

He then signed a 7 year contract with the Kraken with an AAV (average annual value) of $7,142,857.
