A 10-year-old girl has died after collapsing in her schoolyard in Aspropyrgos, western Attica.
The tragedy occurred around noon at the 10th primary school, while the girl was walking around a basketball court.
After she collapsed, the girl was rushed by ambulance – with a police escort – to Thriasio Hospital, where doctors attempted to resuscitate her for more than 20 minutes.
Initial findings indicate that she suffered a heart attack.
In a statement, the Education Ministry said that at the time of the incident, the student was not participating in gym class, as had previously been reported, but was walking around the basketball court.
The ministry added that the student’s medical record indicated no health issues and permitted unrestricted physical activity.
According to the statement, the school’s physical education teacher immediately called the school nurse, who rushed to provide first aid using CPR, while an ambulance was also dispatched to the scene.
