Tributes are being paid to the local man in his 20s after news of his death emerged.

Gardaí have since launched a murder investigation.

Friends yesterday gathered at the location where he was found, leaving flowers and tributes to him.

Mr Gibbons is understood to have been on a bus in the early hours of Sunday morning when a disagreement with others arose.

But after he left the bus in Kildare town it is understood a row developed at Magee Terrace and there was an incident in which Mr Gibbons received a head injury.

Magee Terrace is close to the garda station in the town.

Mr Gibbons was then found unresponsive and rushed to Naas General Hospital. His condition worsened and gardaí confirmed that he died on Thursday.

In a statement, gardaí said a post-mortem examination has been carried out, the results of which will not be released for operational reasons.

Following the post-mortem examination, An Garda Síochána has now commenced a murder investigation.

“Gardaí continue to investigate a serious assault that occurred in Kildare town in the early hours of Sunday. The man, aged in his 20s, who was found unresponsive on Magee Terrace at approximately 3:15am, has since passed away in hospital,” they said.
