Two first-half headers from Viktor Gyokeres and Declan Rice gave us a fifth straight Premier League win as we defeated Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor.

We once again showed our prowess from set pieces as Viktor headed home from close range from our opening corner of the contest.

Rice then rounded off a slick counter-attack as we made it nine straight wins in all competitions.

set piece again

Going into the contest, all four of our away goals in the Premier League had come from corners – and we opened the scoring in the same fashion. Declan Rice’s pinpoint set piece found Gabriel Magalhaes at the backpost and the Brazilian brilliantly cushioned his volley into the path of Gyokeres, who netted from a yard out.

With every corner came a cheer from our supporters as we looked to extend our advantage. Leandro Trossard, making his 100th Premier League appearance for us, found Riccardo Calafiori in space inside the box, but his effort was deflected behind as we ramped up the pressure.

We continued to go in search of a second and nearly found it when Bukayo Saka got to the ball ahead of Maxime Esteve to go one-on-one with Martin Dubravka, but our No.7 could only fire straight at the Slovak stopper.

Burnley had faced the highest number of shots of any Premier League side before today’s match and we continued to add to those numbers in a busy first half. Ebere Eze fed Gyokeres, who steered to Saka, who Dubravka once again thwarted. The ball found it’s way to Trossard who’s effort was then cleared off the line.

ruthless rice

As Burnley looked to find a way back into the contest, we used that to our advantage to double our lead with a lightning-quick counter. Saka’s flicked headed clearance found Gyokeres who produced a superb cross-field ball that found Leandro Trossard in space. The Belgian picked out Rice with his cross and the midfielder was able to power his header beyond Dubravka.

We were on the hunt again from a second counter shortly after Rice’s goal. This time Saka fed Eze on the left but his curling effort was deflected wide as we went in search of a third before the interval.

Following a change-up top to start the second half, with Gyokeres making way for Mikel Merino, it took until the 55th minute for us to register our latest shot at goal. Trossard drove towards the box but his low effort was comfortably held by Dubravka.

Saka continued to stretch the Burnley backline and after being played down the right. The England international set the ball back for Jurrien Timber but his effort was planted into the stands where our supporters watched on.

defensive duties

Our last goal conceded before today was Nick Woltemade’s first half header for Newcastle in our 2-1 win at St James’ Park but our hosts set about breaking that run and almost found a way back into the contest.

A floating free-kick to the back post found Esteve who’s header drifted back into the box but Florentino Luis couldn’t steer his header on target as it drifted over the bar. A win and a seventh consecutive clean sheet were on the line in the second half, and we had to show our tenacity to get over the line as our hosts continued to test our backline.

Substitute Ethan Nwaneri almost added a third late one, but his low drive went just wide of the left corner before fellow substitute Christian Norgaard also had a go from range but found Dubravka in the way.

There was one last effort from Burnley as Marcus Edwards hit the post with his free-kick.
