One of, if not the most notorious rapist in this province has died while in custody on the mainland.

Forty-six-year-old Sofyan Boalag died Saturday, though it’s not yet clear how.

He was incarcerated at the medium security Bath Institution near Kingston, Ontario at the time.

In a statement, the Correctional Service of Canada said there will be a review of the death, with the cause determined by the coroner.

Boalag was convicted of raping two women and a 15-year-old girl in St. John’s more than a decade ago, in 2012.

He attacked his victims randomly, threatened them with knives, and sexually assaulted them after they were choked unconscious.

Boalag was 37 when he was convicted in 2016 and later declared a dangerous offender, which comes with an indefinite prison sentence.

Earlier this year he tried to sue the feds for failing to protect him from a stabbing in 2023, saying he was left permanently disabled.

The Attorney General responded by alleging, among other things, that Boalag brought it on himself, provoking the other inmate.

The lawyer who filed the lawsuit told VOCM News that Boalag’s estate would not benefit from any pain and suffering damages that might come from the suit.
