Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, who broke Wayne Gretzky’s goal scoring record last year, has now scored the 900th career goal in his career.
There is no greater goal scorer in National Hockey League history than Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, who had already broken Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 career goals last year. He’s now become the first player in NHL history to score 900 goals, doing so tonight against the St. Louis Blues early in the 2nd period at Capital One Arena. Ovechkin’s backhand shot off a rebound from the boards got past Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington for the historic tally.
But Binnington was caught apparently trying to hide the puck in his pants, and was confronted by the linesman.
The Capitals then made Binnington pay for the sneaky move by scoring another two quick goals on him, resulting in him being yanked by coach Jim Montgomery for backup Joel Hofer.
Alex Ovechkin’s Future In The NHL Is Not Clear Beyond This Year
Ovechkin is only signed through 2026, and his future beyond this season isn’t assured.
Longtime teammate John Carlsson said the decision lies with Ovechkin and that whatever happens, it’s been “a hell of a ride”.
It’s going to be whatever he wants to do. It’s been a hell of a ride. I’m not going to get too nostalgic too early here on Day 1 of camp. But, yeah, it’s been really cool, obviously, to play with one of the game’s greats and, obviously, now the leading goal-scorer of all time. Those are all insane things that you can reflect on. -John Carlsson
Ovechkin and Carlsson won the Stanley Cup together in 2018.
