Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, has spread across the globe this year and led to culls of birds on farms across Ireland in recent weeks.

The H5N1 strain of the virus has closed Fota Wildlife Park until at least the end of the month and forced the Department of Agriculture to issue a housing order for poultry after birds in multiple farms tested positive for the strain.
