Over 50 individuals aboard a catamaran were rescued by the navy as their vessel sank. On Sunday afternoon, a boat ferrying passengers from the “Mein Schiff 1” cruise ship found itself sinking off the Dominican Republic’s coast, prompting rescue operations.
RTL reported that the catamaran “Boca de Yuma I”, servicing the cruise ship, began to unexpectedly take on water and eventually completely submerged. Images and videos depicted anxious tourists donning life jackets and floating in the water before being safely retrieved by the Dominican navy.
There were no immediate reports of injuries. It comes after the dark mystery of a US couple thrown overboard from a catamaran hijacking.

The primary cruise ship is currently traversing the Atlantic, having departed New York on October 23, and is en route to Montego Bay, Jamaica. The port authority of Samaná stated: “The Dominican Republic Navy is working closely with local authorities to identify those responsible and take measures to prevent such an incident from happening again.”
Sabine Lüke, spokesperson for TUI Cruises, confirmed to German newspaper Bild: “We confirm that an excursion catamaran belonging to an external provider sank during a shore excursion programme. There were just over 50 guests from the Mein Schiff 1 on board, who are all safe and sound and have since returned safely to the ship.”

TUI Cruises is reportedly collaborating closely with the vessel’s operator and relevant authorities in the wake of the incident. Their goal is to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the events, ensuring every detail is scrutinized and appropriate safety protocols are implemented.
Lüke stated: “The safety and well-being of our guests is our top priority. Should individual assistance be necessary, it will of course be provided.”
A TUI Cruises spokesperson verified the incident to the organization: “The excursion catamaran of an external provider sank during an excursion.”
