The first round of the 2025 AFL National Draft is done and dusted, and not without a few curveballs.

As expected, Willem Duursma and Cooper Duff-Tytler landed at West Coast — either side of two academy bids being matched to Gold Coast (Zeke Uwland) and Carlton (Harry Dean) respectively.

The first surprise came with Richmond selecting Sam Grlj at No.8, before Melbourne made a fairytale arrival a reality for Lattrelle Pickett, who joins cousin Kysaiah Pickett at the Demons.

In total, a whopping seven players joined a club with either an Academy or father-son link, while two players in Lachlan Carmichael (Sydney Swans Academy) and Adam Sweid (Essendon NGA) were passed on, instead landing at the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle respectively.

North Melbourne at this stage will kick off proceedings for Round 2 on Thursday night, starting from 7pm AEDT on Fox Footy and Kayo.
