Gardai are at the scene of a fatal crash close to the funeral cortège of one of the five young people who lost their lives in last week’s horrific Louth crash.

It is understood gardai were alerted to the scene in Ardee town where an elderly woman was in a vehicle which collided with a lorry in the town, not far from The Church of Our Lady, where tragic Dylan Commins is set to be laid to rest today.

It is understood the woman, who is in her 70s, has been declared dead at the scene. The woman is suspected to have suffered a medical episode in the vehicle when the incident occurred.

Gardai and emergency services are at the scene, which is right on the main road where the funeral cortège for the young man was due to travel.

As a result the funeral cortège route has been amended, sources say.

In a statement gardai said: “Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal road traffic incident on Bridge Street, Ardee, Co Louth, this morning, Friday 21st November, 2025.

“A collision occurred involving two cars and a truck at approximately 11:25am.

“The driver and only occupant of one the cars, a woman in her 70s, was brought by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where she was pronounced deceased. A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

“No other injuries have been reported at this time.

“The road has closed for Garda Forensic Collision Investigators to conduct an examination of the scene.

“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 11:00 and 11:00am are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Drogheda Garda Station on 041 987 4200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

It comes after a weekend of heartbreak that saw Alan McCluskey, 23, from Drumconrath, Co Meath die along with his girlfriend Chloe McGee, 23, from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, Dylan Commins, 23, from Ardee, Co Louth, Shay Duffy, 21, from Carrickmacross and Chloe Hipson, 21, from Scotland when a Volkswagen Golf they were travelling in collided with a Toyota Landcruiser near Dundalk last Saturday night.
