Liverpool’s already disastrous season hit an even further low last night, with Arne Slot’s side left embarrassed after a 4-1 hammering at the hands of PSV Eindhoven in their Champions League league phase clash at Anfield.

The home side were an absolute shambles on the night, starting with Virgil van Dijk conceding a ridiculous penalty just five minutes into the game. While Liverpool would equalise shortly after and play reasonably well over the remainder of the first half, it was the same old story after the interval.

Plagued by poor organisation, an apparent lack of effort, and some individual errors, they would concede three goals in the second half against the Dutch side.

The result leaves Arne Slot’s future at Anfield in serious doubt, although some believe that the players need to accept the responsibility for the recent run of form.

Jamie Carragher Was Furious Over Jones Explanation For Shocking Liverpool Form

Recommended

Much has been made of the form of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah so far this season, with that pair well short of high standard they have set during their time at Liverpool.

While it is true they have played poorly, Jamie Carragher said on CBS Sports that he believes that other players should have stepped up to compensate for that after being ‘carried’ by the pair in recent times.

I look at some of the others. Step up. Can you only play well when [van Dijk and Salah] play well, or when they carry you?

Their seasons last season were off the scale. Everyone else enjoyed that winning the league, they’re all league champions and have that on their CV, great.

But when they’re not there, where are the other players?..

I actually think, and maybe I thought this a little bit last season, are some of them good enough for Liverpool if Liverpool want to win the biggest trophies?..

They’ve been carried by some of the best players the club has ever had.

There has been plenty of talk emerging from the Liverpool camp in recent times about the club’s poor performance, admitting that they were not good enough and that something needed to change.

Curtis Jones continued that trend last night, pleading for more fight from the team as they attempted to get out of their current rut.

However, Carragher was less than impressed by his claims about the lack of effort from the players.

“Just be a dog out there… It’s got to be on me and the lads to turn this around and not be so nice.”

Curtis Jones is a local player. He’s got passion and is hurting right now, he’s given an interview that will probably go everywhere. I’d love to see Mo Salah speaking there rather than Curtis Jones coming out.

When he’s saying ‘we need to put a tackle in and we need to go to the ball’, who is stopping you?

The only thing in football that nobody can stop you doing is running. It might not happen with the ball, or the ability or the quality, or people have list confidence.

Nobody can stop you tackling, running, and pressing. When he’s saying they’re not doing it, why aren’t they then? Just do it.

Don’t tell us you’re not doing it or you’re going to do it in the next game, just do it.

Fair comments.

Something will certainly need to change at Liverpool, although it remains to be seen whether that will come with the current manager in charge.
