A Winnipeg-based company has been fined $20,000 for failing to provide required safeguards on equipment after an employee’s finger was cut off by a table saw.
The employee was cutting shims and their hand contacted the saw blade, resulting in the loss of a middle finger, on Feb. 1, 2023, said a news release from Manitoba Labour and Immigration.
Kawenhowen Projects pleaded guilty on Sept. 23, 2025, to violating the Workplace Safety and Health Act.
In addition to the fine, Kawenhowen, which specializes in residential building, finishing and renovations, has been ordered to pay $3,000 to the Workplace Safety and Health public education fund.
Another Winnipeg company, Ital-Stone Design Ltd., a custom stone fabricator specializing in countertops and custom surfaces, was also fined $20,000 for an employee injury.
On March 15, 2023, a worker was hurt when a granite slab dropped and shattered while being moved with a forklift.
The injuries were lacerations and fractures to the worker’s leg, according to a provincial spokesperson.
Ital-Stone Design pleaded guilty on Nov. 4, 2025, to failing to provide a safe workplace.
The courts also imposed an additional $5,000 to be paid to the education fund.
