Five people have died and one person has been hurt in a fire in an apartment building in Neuves-Maisons in eastern France, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said on Sunday.

Local newspaper L’Est Républicain reported that 70 fire officers had battled the blaze in the three-storey building in the centre of the small town near Nancy overnight.

The dead are reported to be a couple, their adolescent son and two of his friends. Fire services prevented the fire from spreading to an adjacent building.
