If you are a true cinephile, you were definitely looking forward to the New York Film Critics Circle announcing its winners, and now that they have finally unveiled the names of the victors, it seems like this awards season is going to be very exciting.
Although some names were expected to win big, there were some unexpected choices that surprised everyone. Paul Thomas Anderson’s black-comedy thriller One Battle After Another turned out to be one of the biggest winners of the night as it won two trophies, including Best Feature Film. The win comes a few hours after the Warner Bros backed movie took home the same accolade at the Gotham Awards.

Benicio Del Toro, who played the role of Sergeant St. Carlos in the aforementioned movie, took home the Best Supporting Actor trophy. This was his second NYFCC win after winning Best Actor for Traffic in 2000.
Meanwhile, Brazil’s official entry to the Oscars, The Secret Agent, also won two prestigious awards: Best International Feature and Best Actor for Wagner Moura. On the other hand, Jafar Panahi turned out to be the winner in the Best Director category for It Was Just an Accident.Â

One of the biggest surprises came in the Best Supporting Actress category, where Amy Madigan emerged victorious for her work in Zach Cregger’s Weapons. Her win makes the category really interesting, and it looks like it’s one of the categories where finding a clear winner might be tricky as the awards season moves forward. In the Best Actress category, Rose Byrne won for her impeccable work in Mary Bronstein’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, and received her first major acting prize this awards season.
