Liverpool improved their chances of securing a top-eight finish in the Champions League league phase this evening, grabbing a late 1-0 victory over Inter at the San Siro.

Arne Slot’s side were fully deserving of their victory, although there was a hint of controversy about the manner in which it arrived. Dominik Szoboszlai would score an 88th minute penalty to earn the win for his side. However, the decision to award the spot kick for a shirt pull on Florian Wirtz was a marginal one.

Despite this, the win massively improves Liverpool’s chances of finishing in the top of the league phase, earning passage straight into the last 16 in the process.

Virgil Van Dijk Had No Nonsense Take On Mo Salah’s Ongoing Fallout With Liverpool

Liverpool managed to get the victory tonight without Mohamed Salah, who did not travel with the squad due to his controversial comments over the weekend. It remains to be seen if he will be back in the group for this weekend’s clash against Brighton.

Speaking on Amazon Prime after the game, Virgil van Dijk said that it was not his place to say what should happen between his teammate and the club next.

Obviously it’s difficult, but it’s a collective difficult situation that we’re all in. Obviously between Mo and the club things are going on, for the consequences he is not here today to help us try and get the three points.

That’s the reality, but nothing changes in terms of our focus or determination to try and get this for the football club…

I don’t think I’m the one to speak about if somebody has to apologise for everything.

It’s him airing his feelings over the last couple of days, that’s something the club has to deal with. Obviously us as well, but if I look at the dressing room the day after, nothing really has changed…

The reality also is that Mo is going to Africa at the end of the week.

The thing is I know Mo for such a long time. We are good friends, we have been through highs and lows. He has been a big part of the success I’ve had at the club in my football career, I’ve been a big part of his success.

We speak and those types of things will stay in house like it should be. We have to brace ourselves and be against the outside noise.

Liverpool’s attentions will now quickly turn towards Saturday’s Premier League clash with Brighton. Despite their disastrous run of form, the Merseyside club sit just three points outside the top four as things stand.

They will be hoping that this result can prove to be a turning point in what has been a massively disappointing campaign up to this point.
