Residents are being urged to exercise caution after the city issued a significant weather declaration ahead of an approaching winter storm

The City of Sault Ste. Marie has declared a significant weather event due to a winter weather hazard.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement, predicting rain today followed by a possible flash freeze tonight into Friday, the city said in a news release.

“Total rainfall amounts of 10 to 25 mm, with flash freeze, are possible,” the release said.

Local snowfall amounts of five to 10 cm and reduced visibility in snow and blowing snow are expected. Rain will affect the area today before changing to snow tonight into Friday morning as temperatures rapidly fall below the freezing mark.

“The declaration of a significant weather event is not a notice of a reduced level of service or road closure. It is intended to notify the public that caution must be observed when travelling on city-maintained roads.”

Restoring the roads to optimal conditions may take longer than usual.

Public Works monitors the weather and patrols the roadways to deploy all available crews to address snow and ice accumulation.

“During a significant event, all roads and sidewalks maintained by the city are considered to be in a ‘state of repair.’

“Motorists should drive according to the conditions and allow space for heavy equipment operators to clear and sand roadways safely and efficiently,” the release said.

The parking by-law remains in effect, with motorists not permitted to park on city streets between midnight and 6 a.m. during the winter months. However, during a winter event, motorists should not park on city streets or impede sidewalks during the day to assist in the efficiency of snow removal.

“Transit Services reminds customers that there may be delays due to adverse conditions.”
