Luton Town boss Jack Wilshere was frustrated by the goals conceded by his team as they went down 3-2 at Reading on Thursday.

The Hatters controlled large parts of the game with some excellent passing but found themselves 2-0 down before drawing level with goals from Jordan Clark and Nigel Lonwijk – only to concede again two minutes later.

“There were a lot of good things, but ultimately disappointing because we came here for three points and go away with none,” Wilshere told BBC Three Counties Radio.

“We’re starting to build that identity of who we are, but the identity involves in possession, out of possession, transitions, set plays, in this league especially.”

He continued: “We spoke a lot about how we start games and how we want to take control early, build momentum, kill their spirit a little bit and I feel we did do that – and then that one moment on transition and they get a penalty. It’s frustrating.”

Wilshere chose to use experienced midfielder Jordan Clark in a more forward role and it paid off with the 32-year-old’s 59th-minute goal.

“He is an intelligent footballer. He is definitely an option as a nine, he gives you something different, he just needs maybe Lamine (Fanne) or Zach Nelson alongside who can run beyond to stretch the opposition.

“I thought Jordan was good and he’s obviously the guy that sets the tactical patterns off,” Wilshere added.

The defeat left Luton seventh in League One, three points outside the play-off places. Their next game is on Boxing Day, at home to Wycombe Wanderers.
