Paddy Troy, Ballynacargy, Mullingar, Co Westmeath, passed away peacefully on Tuesday surrounded by his family in Mullingar’s Midland Regional Hospital.

Mr Troy, who was in his 91st year, was the father of Minister of State and Longford-Westmeath TD Robert Troy.

In a moving tribute to his father, Mr Troy spoke of man who lived for his family and those closest to him.

“It is with deep sadness that I share the news of my father’s passing,” said Mr Troy wrote on his own Facebook page.

“A quiet man, he showed his love for us through all that he did. He will be sorely missed, but I take comfort in believing that my predeceased siblings were there to welcome him to his new home.

“Rest in peace, Daddy — you were one in a million.”

A keen sports follower and man of devout faith, many spoke of a man whose “trademark smile” and unwavering genoricity spread across a community that is now mourning his loss.

“He was so very much part of the heart of the family and community, his wonderful Christian values always to the fore, giving his all, asking nothing in return,” said one local man.

“He has left an amazing legacy of kindness throughout his long life.”

Mr Troy, who is predeceased by his infant children, his daughter Mary, son Matthew, sister Freda and brother Seamus is survived by his loving wife Sarah and ten children, Anne, Padraig, Anthony, Bernard, Michael, Gerard, Paul, Liz, Liam and Robert and brother Fr Ulic Troy.

The late Mr Troy’s funeral mass took place today on Friday in Ballynacargy Parish Church followed by burial in Sonna Cemetery.
