An 81-year-old suspect has been charged following a deadly hit-and-run in North York Wednesday night.

Emergency crews were called to the scene near Sheppard Avenue West and Bathurst Street, at approximately 9 p.m. for a collision.

When they arrived at the intersection of Goddard Street and Codsell Avenue, a woman, identified by her husband as 64-year-old Lillian Marlene Nagy, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nagy’s husband said she was riding her e-scooter at the time she was struck.

The vehicle involved did not remain at the scene, police said Wednesday, as they began their search for what they described as a small white sedan that was seen leaving the site of the crash.

In an update Thursday afternoon, police said they located the white Mazda near Sheppard and Bathurst.

Toronto resident Joan Andrews was subsequently arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

She’s scheduled to appear in a Toronto courtroom this afternoon.

Victim was leaving friend’s house before she was struck

Nagy’s husband, John Moran, said he and his wife were was just leaving a friend’s house in the area before the crash.

Moran said he and Nagy both worked for the Toronto District School Board and had only recently retired after 30 years.

The couple owns a home in Malindi, Kenya where they had been helping children in the village for 20 years.

Kristine Suarez lives near Goddard and Codsell and described the crash scene in an interview with CTV News Toronto.

“It was horrible to see because she flew very far from where she was hit, so definitely it was more than 40 or 50 km/h. But this is a quiet neighbourhood, at least drive 20 to 30 km/h,” she said.

Nagy’s family has set up a crowdfunding campaign following her death. In a post on the page, the family said that Nagy “was a shining light in the lives of everyone who knew her—kind, compassionate, and always ready to help without ever expecting anything in return.”
