Michael D. Higgins has been enjoying the Christmas period in Galway as he was spotted at one of the city’s pubs this week.

The former President of Ireland was at Kelehan’s Pub in Bushypark over the weekend and while there, was happy to pose for a photo with a cadre of delighted staff.

Kelehan’s Bar put up the photo on social media with the caption: “The main man!”

It has been over a month since Mr Higgins left his post as President and set up home permanently in Galway with his wife Sabina and their beloved Bernese Mountain dog, Misneach.

November 11 marked the 84-year-old’s last day at the Áras with his successor Catherine Connolly now taking the reins.

Last month, Mr Higgins was pictured dining at Thai Garden, located on Spanish Arch in Galway city. The restaurant shared photos of smiling staff posing with Ireland’s ninth president on social media.

They said: “We are delighted to welcome Michael and Sabina Higgins back to Galway and especially Thai Garden. It’s always an honour to have you with us!”

Meanwhile, earlier this month saw President Catherine Connolly call into a beloved Connemara café for her lunch.

POTA café in Baile na hAbhann were honoured to have President Connolly call in on Thursday afternoon, December 11 for a bite to eat following a visit to the Gaeltacht.

The Galway native happily posed for a photo with owner Diarmuid as the café thanked her for her support over the years.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Diarmuid Ó Mathúna said of her visit: “It was a delight to have her, it always is. There’s no airs and graces or notions about her.

“She doesn’t expect any extra special treatment and she’s so lovely to everyone when she comes in. Anyone who comes over and says hello to her, she’s more than happy to give her time to them.”
