Philadelphia Flyers prospect Porter Martone will be captain of Canada’s World Junior team as the tournament gets underway on Friday, Hockey Canada announced.

Martone, 19, was drafted sixth overall by the Flyers in the 2025 NHL Draft and has 11 goals and 20 points with Michigan State University in the NCAA this season.

The 6-foot-3 winger represented Canada in last year’s World Juniors in Ottawa, recording a goal in three games in a fifth-place finish. He also represented his country at the 2025 World Hockey Championship in another fifth-place finish.

Martone is accomplished while playing for Canada, taking home a gold medal at the 2024 Under-18 World Hockey Championship, and 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. He also has a silver medal from the 2022 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge and a bronze medal from the 2023 Under-18 World Hockey Championship.

The Peterborough, Ont., native played for the Brampton Steelheads in the Ontario Hockey League last season, recording 37 goals and 98 points in 57 games.

Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Harrison Brunicke and Utah Mammoth draft pick Cole Beaudoin were selected as alternate captains.

Brunicke, 19, was drafted 44th overall by the Penguins in the 2024 NHL Draft and appeared in nine NHL games this season, recording a goal. The 6-foot-3 right-shot defenceman also has four assists in five American Hockey League games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Beaudoin, 19, was drafted 24th overall by the Mammoth in 2024 and is also a returning member of last year’s fifth-place winning team, recording an assist in five games.

The 6-foot-2 centre is the captain of the OHL’s Barrie Colts and has 14 goals and 41 points in 25 games this season.

Canada begins the World Juniors against Czechia on Friday as they look to return to the podium for the first time since 2023.
