England have avoided an Ashes whitewash by winning a memorable Boxing Day Test at the MCG.

They were set 175 runs to win in the second innings and chased them down in the final session of the second day.

It is the first time the tourists have won a Test on Australian soil since 2011. It is the first time Joe Root and Ben Stokes have won a Test match in Australia.

Harry Brook faces the last ball, but the winning runs come from four leg-byes off Jhye Richardson.

The English finish the day on 6-178 and win this match by four wickets. Brook (18 runs) and Jamie Smith (three) are the not-out batsmen. The Barmy Army are going berserk.

Newcomer Jacob Bethell smacked 40 off 46 balls to set up the drought-breaking win, while Zak Crawley hit 37 and Ben Duckett scored 34 to put Noosa-gate behind him.

Australia resumed the day 0-4, but could never get settled and were all out for 132. Travis Head top scored with 46 off 67 balls.

Brydon Carse was the pick of the English bowlers with 4-34, while Ben Stokes took 3-24.

Australia lead this Ashes series 3-1 with the next Test starting in Sydney on Sunday week, January 4.

While it is a famous English win, Cricket Australia will be counting the cost of the second Test this Ashes series finishing within two days. The MCG pitch has come under fire for having a 10mm grass covering and providing too much assistance to the bowlers.

Twenty-six wickets fell across two days.
