WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – A long period of stormy winter weather sets up for Sunday and will continue through Saturday.

First, on Sunday areas of the North Country will see freezing rain, part of a Winter Weather Advisory. Total ice accumulations could be three-tenths of an inch. Wind gusts will get going as well reaching as much as 45 miles an hour from the southwest.
For parts of the St. Lawrence Valley (Ogdensburg to Massena), just under a half-inch of icing could happen.
This icing will make surfaces slippery and runs the risk of bringing down power lines and tree limbs.
Then, it’s time for lake effect snow which will land in Jefferson and Lewis Counties and involve areas south of there.
Monday afternoon, a winter storm warning goes into effect with the National Weather Service saying there will be whiteout conditions making travel treacherous or nearly impossible.
The week-long lake effect snow will oscillate several times this week, according to the NWS beginning Monday around Watertown. Then shift south for Tuesday and back up closer to Watertown on Wednesday. Right now, one to two feet of snow is predicted, but the NWS warns “snowfall amounts could be much higher where lake bands persist during this long duration event.”
The winter storm warning runs until January 3rd.
