It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our dad, William Christopher Spooney, on December 19, 2025. Known to most simply as Chrissy, he was a man who loved hard, laughed often, and lived his life for his family.
Chrissy was a fiercely proud father to his boys, Christopher (Alyssa), Joshua (Morganne), Tyler, and Jonathan (predeceased). Few things brought him more joy than watching them excel—not only in baseball and basketball, but in life itself—as professionals, as husbands, and as devoted fathers. He spoke often and proudly of their accomplishments, but what mattered most to him was the kind of men they had become and the beautiful families they were raising with the partners he adored.
A special bond existed between Chrissy and his youngest son, Tyler. Tyler was always there for his dad—through the good days and the hard ones—and their love and connection was like no other. It was a relationship built on loyalty, understanding, and unconditional love, and it meant the world to Chrissy.
His greatest gifts were his grandchildren—Isaac, Ethan, Braxton, Drew, and Kyla. Being Granda filled his heart in a way nothing else could. Whether he was cheering from the sidelines at ball fields, sitting proudly at dance competitions, or enjoying a simple evening fishing, those moments brought him pure joy.
Among the many people he loved, two girls held a truly special place in Chrissy’s heart—his granddaughter Kyla and his mother Mary. Kyla, his only granddaughter, was his special princess. She opened his heart in new ways, teaching him all the little things that only a girl could, and bringing a softness and light into his life that he treasured deeply.
At the very centre of Chrissy’s world was his beloved mother, Mary. She meant everything to him. Their bond was unbreakable, and her love, strength, and guidance shaped the man he was. Family was everything to Chrissy, and much of his heart and resilience came from her.
Chrissy carried deep heartache throughout his life. He endured the devastating loss of his nephew and his son at far too young an age, followed by the passing of his father and later his brother. These losses left lasting pain that he carried quietly, yet they also deepened his compassion and his capacity to love those closest to him.
While Chrissy faced struggles, his very best moments were when he was fully present—when laughter filled the room and joy was shared freely. Those moments were often found at home on the Northside, at a good old Spooney kitchen party, surrounded by his parents, brothers, sister, sons, and nieces and nephews, or gathered at Joshua’s and Tyler’s homes, where family meant everything. The last nine months he spent in Ontario with Christopher and his family were especially meaningful to him. He often said those days were the best days of his life.
Chrissy was also a proud member of the Local 1115 Labourers’ Union, where he worked for many years. Through his work, he built strong friendships, deep respect, and a sense of brotherhood.
Chrissy was known for his quick wit, classic dad jokes, and his lovable personality. Everyone loved Chrissy. Family gatherings, holidays, birthdays, and kitchen parties were where he truly shined. Like his father and brothers, he loved karaoke—never missing a chance to grab the mic or encourage someone else to sing. His laughter, energy, and love for music brought people together and will be deeply missed.
Chrissy is survived by his loving mother Mary; his sons Christopher, Joshua, and Tyler and their families; his brothers Michael (Kelly), Johnny, Jeff (Verna), and Steven (Terri); his sister Anna (Paul); many nieces and nephews who meant so much to him; and Kelly, the mother of his children Christopher, Joshua, and Tyler and a significant part of his life for many years.
He was predeceased by his father Michael, his brother Derrick, his son Jonathan, and beloved family members Ryan and Charlotte.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Joshua’s team for their kindness and compassion during Chrissy’s most difficult days.
Chrissy’s service will be held at JM Jobe’s Funeral Home in Sydney Mines on Tuesday January 6, 2026, with visitation from 5-7pm, followed by a celebration of life officiated by Rev. Nick Phillips. All who knew and loved Chrissy are welcome to attend.

In every hug, he’s by our side.

A legacy of love beyond compare.

Forever with us day and night.
