The driver who was involved in a fatal crash which also left Anthony Joshua injured may face prosecution for reckless driving, according to local reports. Sources in Nigeria suggest that investigations conducted by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have revealed the former heavyweight world champion’s vehicle was travelling at dangerous speeds and involved in wrongful overtaking manoeuvres—offences considered severe breaches of traffic laws and potential grounds for criminal liability when deaths occur.

Investigators are reportedly completing paperwork for the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division, which is liaising with prosecutors to establish suitable charges. Charges relating to dangerous or reckless driving resulting in death are understood to be under active consideration. The source has also confirmed that Joshua suffered a fractured leg as a result of the crash, reports the Mirror.

While officials have yet to issue a formal public announcement, the incident has reignited discussion surrounding road safety and responsibility on Nigeria’s motorways. The collision took place on Monday on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and tragically resulted in the deaths of two of Joshua’s close friends and team members, strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, and his personal trainer, Kevin “Lateef” Ayodele, who were both aged 36.

The update follows statements from his family confirming the sportsman is “responding to treatment” following Sunday’s fatal crash.

Joshua, 36, is expected to remain under care at the Duchess International Hospital, where his condition is reported as “stable”, through to the New Year. His mum, Yeta Odusanya, has been by his side in the private hospital in Lagos, but other family members have not yet been allowed to visit him.

Following the accident, Joshua reportedly stated: “I feel pain all over my body.” David Joshua, an elder brother of Joshua’s dad Robert, said: “We have not been allowed to see him, but from information given by authorities, he is responding to treatment.”

Sina and Latif, who were seated on the same side of the Lexus, are thought to have died instantly. It is understood that Joshua was sitting behind the driver, alongside another passenger, at the time of the crash.
