Incident on Dennis Street in Capreol on Friday leads to 13-hour standoff with police and event arrest of four people, all of whom are facing drug charges

Four people are facing drug charges after a weapons complaint in Capreol on Jan. 2 led to a protracted standoff with Greater Sudbury Police.

Just after 1 a.m. that morning, GSPS said officers were dispatched to a residence on Dennie Street in Capreol “in relation to a weapons complaint.”

“Information provided was that an interaction took place between multiple individuals and one person pointed a gun at another person,” GSPS said in a news release. “The individuals with the firearm left the scene prior to police arrival.”

As officers continued the investigation, they received word the people involved had returned to Dennie Street and were inside a residential unit.

Officers from the GSPS Break, Enter and Robbery Unit were dispatched first, with members of the Emergency Response Unit arriving around 11:20 a.m. to set up containment on the building.

“Just after 12 p.m., three individuals exited the residential unit and surrendered to police without incident, however, officers believed that additional parties involved in the incident were still inside,” the GSPS news release states.

BEAR Unit officers applied for and were granted a search warrant to enter the building. At around 4 p.m., a fourth person exited the building and was taken into custody.

“Shortly after, members of the ERU made entry into the residence and no other individuals were located inside,” police said in a news release. “A search of the residence officers located a replica handgun, 71.5g of suspected cocaine with a value of approx. $7,500. Police also seized $2,300 in Canadian currency.”

The four people arrested are all facing various drug charges, GSPS said.

Three individuals have been released on appearance notices and the fourth will be held overnight to attend Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) court to answer to the charges.
