A worker at an Inuvik business was critically injured during a fire on Wednesday afternoon, the town’s fire department says.

In a statement sent to Cabin Radio, the fire department said a second person suffered minor injuries in the fire, which was reported shortly after 4pm on Wednesday on Airport Road.

Inuvik’s mayor, Peter Clarkson, identified the business involved as Northwind Industries, the CBC reported.

More than 20 firefighters were required to put out the fire in temperatures below -40C, the fire department stated, adding the operation lasted more than three hours.

The fire department said it is now working with the NWT fire marshal’s office “to conduct a cause and origin investigation and cannot comment on these aspects at the current time, but no criminality is suspected.”
