Luka Doncic won’t be hitting free agency next summer.
Doncic signed a three-year, $165 million maximum extension, with a player option on the third year, his agent Bill Duffy told ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The deal eliminates Doncic’s 2026-27 player option while allowing him to opt out in 2028 and re-sign for a projected five years and $417 million. If that is what happens, Doncic would end up with the same overall amount of money as if he had signed the supermax with the Mavericks, who instead traded him.

I just signed my extension with the Lakers. Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who’ve shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning. 💜💛 pic.twitter.com/PrTfTxxlpU

“I just signed my extension with the Lakers. Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud,” Doncic posted on X. “Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who’ve shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning.
“Today I’m also committing $5 million to help 77 young athletes around the world chase their dreams, just like I did. Basketball gave me everything, and I’m lucky to be able to give back and help the next generation.”
Doncic, 26, has been in the news this summer, recently participating in a Men’s Health profile to tout his slimmed-down physique. That came as a rebuttal to reporting around the trade that depicted Doncic as overweight and unserious about his fitness, which was apparently part of the reason the Mavericks shockingly traded their franchise player.
According to the magazine, Doncic has stuck to a gluten-free, low-sugar diet that includes intermittent fasting and at least 250 grams of protein per day.

“Luka is an absolute killer on the court and blends that with unique generosity and care for the community,” Lakers GM Rob Pelinka said in a statement. “Above all else, Luka will lead our franchise to pursue future championships, a goal that will forever define the Lakers.”
Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists in 50 games for both the Mavericks and Lakers last season.
