Calgary police have confirmed that a fatal altercation in the northwest community of Edgemont last week was a case of self-defence.

Officers were called to a residence along Edgemont Court around 4:15 on Friday afternoon for a report of an altercation inside.
When they arrived, they discovered a man in his 40s who was in medical distress, as well as a woman in her 30s who was injured.
Despite the efforts of first responders, the man died on scene, while the woman was transported to hospital in stable condition.
A third person, who police describe as the woman’s father and who witnessed part of the altercation, was also found at the scene, but was uninjured.
“After a thorough investigation, police believe that the man had lured the woman to the residence under the false pretense of a property showing,” said Staff Sgt. Scott Guterson, with the CPS homicide unit.

“While in the residence, the man attacked the woman without provocation. An altercation ensued which resulted in the death of the man.”
Guterson said the man and woman were not in a domestic relationship. Instead the two appear to have been discussing a short-term rental of the property.
Calgary police were called out to the home on Edgemont Drive northwest, around 4:15 Friday afternoon. A man in his 40s was killed in what police confirm was a case of self defence.

While they’re not releasing any information about the woman, or the nature of her injuries, in order to protect her privacy, neighbour Alex Hansen told Global News that she is a long-time member of the community who ran to her home for help.
“About 4.15, (there was) a knock on my door and the girl across the street came running to the door, was covered in blood and was yelling, ‘My dad is in the basement and somebody is trying to kill him,’” said Hansen.

“My friend who is visiting from Golden (B.C.) came out to calm her down and she had a knife in her hand and she dropped the knife and from that point on there was police for two days around here interviewing as many people as they could.”
On Tuesday morning there was some remnants of police tape outside the home where the fatal altercation took place in the northwest Calgary community of Edgemont.

Police say the attack happened when the man and the woman became temporarily separated from her father inside the large house and her actions to defend herself “undoubtedly saved her life.”
“Ahmed’s death has been deemed a non-culpable homicide and no charges will be laid in the incident,” said Guterson. “I can say that in my experience in the Homicide Unit, this is easily the most clear-cut case of self-defence that I have ever been involved in.”
Police said there was some communication between the man and the woman in the months leading up to the attack and while they aren’t aware of anyone else who may have been targeted by him, they are making an appeal for anyone who may have had similar interactions with him to contact Calgary police or Crime Stoppers.
