A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
HBO
If you haven’t read the novellas and your first experience of Dunk and Egg is last night’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, you may not have any real idea when it’s taking place compared to the other HBO shows, House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones itself.
That’s understandable, given that this is a more self-contained story. We see a Baratheon, a Targaryen, but when exactly is this? Well, here’s the timeline, though exact dates can be a touch hard to come by.
House of the Dragon: Set about 130-170 years before Game of Thrones, around 130 AC (After Conquest)A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Set about 90 years before Game of Thrones, around 210 ACGame of Thrones: Starts around 298 AC, lasts seven years to end at around 305 AC
If you want to know who “Egg” really is in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and don’t mind book spoilers, you can read about his lineage below so you know where he fits into things.
Viserys I Targaryen (played by Paddy Considine in House of the Dragon) father of:Rhaenyra Targaryen (played by Emma D’Arcy in House of the Dragon) mother of:Aegon III Targaryen (a toddler in House of the Dragon) father of:Daeron II Targaryen (no show) father of:Maekar I Targaryen (played by Sam Spruell in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) father of:Aegon V “Egg” Targaryen (played by Dexter Sol Ansell in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) father of:Jaehaerys II Targaryen (no show) father of:Aerys II “The Mad King” Targaryen (played by David Rintoul in Game of Thrones) father of:Viserys, Daenerys and Rhaegar TargaryenRhaegar being the secret father of Jon Snow, aka Aegon Targaryen
Got all that? I hope I did, and I will correct if I missed something. Even looking this up, that was still quite a trip. In other words, Egg is the grandfather of The Mad King, who is the father of Daenerys, and the grandfather of Jon Snow, if you want to simplify all that.
There are loose ties of a connection between Ser Duncan the Tall and Brienne of Tarth, though there’s no direct confirmation from Martin. And it’s more than just “they’re both tall.” I think the implication that it’s true, but it may never be explicitly stated.
