Winter weather arrived in North Texas overnight into Saturday morning. We were seeing reports of snow, sleet and cold rain across DFW as people woke up for the weekend.

So, how are the roads looking? Is it safe to drive?

The short answer: It would be best to stay home Saturday and through the weekend, if at all possible.

We were starting to get reports of deteriorating road conditions in the western parts of the Metroplex, even though widespread issues weren’t reported as of 6:30 a.m. However, a quick look at the Texas Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed coated roadways across North Texas after sunrise.

The good news: Since Saturday morning wasn’t a typical weekday commute, it appeared most people were staying home.

Our WFAA crew near the Buc-ee’s in Denton was starting to see slushy road conditions as a result of sleet and precipitation. Our crew also heard reports from drivers who reported worsening conditions.

Another WFAA crew was heading from DFW Airport to Burleson on Saturday morning and saw a lot of sleet along the way, with some of it piling up along the sides of the roadway. And here was the view when they actually made it to Burleson:

Road conditions are expected to worsen as the weekend goes on. Temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing through the weekend. Snow, ice, sleet and freezing rain are all in the forecast.
