The ruling Liberal Democratic Party is on track to secure a standalone majority in the Feb. 8 Lower House election, according to the latest opinion polls by two media outlets, which would be a huge win for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Since campaigning for the election kicked off Tuesday, uncertainty has persisted over how the LDP will fare without backing from Komeito, its former coalition partner of 26 years, or coordination with its current junior coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party (JIP).

But the two opinion polls suggest the LDP is expected to emerge from the election strong, especially in districts with many conservative voters.
