This story was updated at 5:02 PM to reflect new uncounted vote tallies in Morris County.
Analilia Mejia increased her lead in the special Democratic primary for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th district by ten votes and now leads former Rep. Tom Malinowski by an 889-vote margin in the race for Mikie Sherrill’s seat.
Mejia leads Malinowski, 18,584 to 17,695, 29.1% to 27.7%.
Essex added 839 new votes to the tally today. There were no additional vote tallies in the Morris and Passaic portions of the district.
Former Lt. Governor Tahesha Way is in third place with 17.4%, followed by Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill (14.3%), Passaic County Commissioner John Bartlett (2.7%), Chatham Borough Councilman Justin Strickland (2.1%), Morris Township Committeeman Jeff Grayzel (1.9%), U.S. Army combat veteran Zach Beecher (1.9%), and former Obama White House staffer Cammie Croft (1%). Newcomer Anna Williams and Trump impersonator J-:L Cavin each received less than 1%, as did two candidates who dropped out of the race.
Essex County has 1,171 uncounted provisional ballots and 498 vote-by-mail ballots to be counted; Morris has 694 uncounted provisionals and 1,918 unprocessed VBMs; and Passaic has 85 uncounted provisionals and 307 unprocessed mail-in ballots. Some of these 4,673 ballots will be from registered Republicans, and not all will be counted.
If Mejia’s lead holds, she will face Republican Joe Hathaway, the mayor of Randolph, in an April 16 special election for Sherrill’s unexpired term. She resigned in November following her election as governor.
