At least 30 vehicles were involved. The northbound lanes of the highway remain closed as crews investigate and work to clear the vehicles.
PUEBLO, Colo. — Four people died and 29 others were injured in a crash involving multiple vehicles that occurred during brown out conditions on Interstate 25 south of Pueblo Tuesday.Â
The crash happened at about 10:02 a.m. on I-25 at milepost 92, just south of Pueblo Boulevard, according to Colorado State Patrol. CSP said there were crashes on both sides of the highway – with the much larger pile-up in the northbound lanes. At least 30 vehicles, including six semitrucks, were involved in the two crashes.
“The vehicles that we do know that are involved are several commercial motor vehicles, pickups pulling horse trailers, SUVs, and passenger vehicles, but we’ll get an accurate count once we have the time to go back through and get those,” CSP Major Brian Lyons said in an update Tuesday afternoon.Â
He said the highway was open at the time, but conditions deteriorated suddenly due to weather.
“This was one of those storms that came through and the wind picked up very quickly and that location down there unfortunately due to the lack of moisture and stuff that we’ve had in the area recently, the dirt and everything just traversed all the way across I-25 and created just what I’ll call is a dirt or a brownout. That visibility, it was next to nothing. So by the time we got those notifications, the crash had already occurred,” Â Lyons said.
According to CSP, 29 people were injured. UCHealth said their hospitals have received multiple patients. As of noon, the hospital system said UCHealth Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo had received 13 patients. No information about their injuries was provided. The CommonSpirit health system said they’ve received 11 patients related to the crash.Â
CSP said 10 people who were involved in the crash were unhurt and remained at the scene. School buses were brought in to take them to another location. They had to bring in specialty vehicles to remove animals from the scene because one of the vehicles was hauling goats and sheep, CSP said.Â
They’re still investigating the exact cause.
“We’re looking through all of those pieces right now and looking at the vehicles and we’re going to try to match up the damage that occurred and their location as to where everything ended up and then try to figure out what was the initial crash and then what precipitated through there,” Lyons said.
According to CSP, the victims who died are believed to be from different vehicles. They will be identified by the Pueblo County Coroner’s Office at a later time.
The southbound lanes reponed around 2: 30 p.m. The northbound lanes will remain closed for an extended period, with a detour in place from Exit 91 to Exit 94.
A wind restriction is also in place for I-25 from Pueblo to the New Mexico state line. During a restriction, high profile vehicles are required to park or turn around to avoid rollovers.
