Serious safety concerns have been raised over a section of the R250 road in Letterkenny, the main route from the town to Dungloe and Glenties.

Local resident Liam Russell, who was awoken by another crash in July, said that he and his family live in fear of incidents on the stretch of road from Slate Row to the O’Donnell Park GAA grounds.

Liam says that more speed control measures, better lighting and signage are needed to make the road at Sallaghagraine safer for all.

Three years have passed since it was confirmed that the R250 from Kernans Spar out to the Aura Leisure Centre was to be upgraded under the Active Travel scheme.

“It is clear that immediate and proactive measures are required before a more serious tragedy occurs,” Liam said.

He added that the footpath is extremely narrow, and in some places, pedestrians have to step out onto the road when passing others. “This is simply unacceptable and presents a serious safety hazard every day.”

A zebra crossing was installed near the Aura Leisure Centre in recent years, but Liam said there is a “blatant disregard” shown by some road users who fail to stop for pedestrians.

He said: “Vehicles frequently travel at excessive speeds along this road, morning, evening and late at night. The presence of a zebra crossing is meant to offer protection to pedestrians, but unfortunately, it suffers from limited visibility at night. It is inadequately lit and not clearly marked for approaching drivers, especially those unfamiliar with the area.

In the lead into the winter months, he is calling for urgent attention in terms of both enforcement of speed limits and improved lighting and visibility.

“This is a matter of public safety, and our community deserves better protection. I would be grateful for Donegal County Council and the Gardai’s urgent attention to these matters,” he added.
