Davies plotted the Canaries downfall with an early double salvo at Carrow Road that moved the big-spending Blues within two points of the top six.

The Birmingham chief also completed a win double over Philippe Clement, after inflicting a 4-1 defeat in the Belgian’s first game in charge.

“Norwich is a completely different animal to the team we faced at our place. I was wary of them and their qualities,” said Davies. “It is up there with the best away performances., but we have been strong at home. The players were buoyant when they got back to the dressing room. They know when they have had to fight and to earn it.

“Excellent win. I really liked how the players approached the game. We were brave, aggressive, I don’t think we allowed Norwich a chance to settle on the ball. Our pressing game was strong, we put them under pressure.

“We had some really good moves in the first half culminating in the two goals, and my feeling was we could get the third and really take it away from Norwich. Very strong from our side.

“Naturally you can anticipate the home team will have that rally. I knew it was going to come. It did straight after half-time. Their tails were up, they had nothing to lose really. We had to defend deeper in the second half against a team absolutely flying. Very good players, good manager, it was a big win.”

Davies was indebted to his keeper, James Beadle, who thwarted Mo Toure twice and Kellen Fisher in key moments.

“You always look at the training ground and what they do there and hope it is repeated in the games. He is big size but he is quick across his line and reactive and that was a really important double save with his feet,” he said.

“It doesn’t surprise me because I see it all the time in training and he will get to balls when we are doing finishing that you think, ‘How did he get to that?’ A lot of focus now is on how good a keeper is with the ball at his feet. The fundamental things are making saves, and he made two big ones.”
