U.S. President Donald Trump is taking some heat following a call to the men’s Olympic hockey team after their gold medal victory.

Thanks to an overtime winner from Jack Hughes, the U.S. defeated Canada in the gold medal game at Milano Cortina 2026 on Sunday. It marked their first gold medal win in men’s hockey since 1980.

This was a matchup hockey fans had been hoping to see, and to no surprise, had many tuning in throughout all of North America, including President Trump. Following the victory, Trump jumped on a phone call to invite the men’s team to a State of the Union, but a comment that immediately followed that invite has him in some hot water.

“I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that,” Trump said. “I do believe I’d probably be impeached, okay.”

The phone call was made through the director of the FBI, Kash Patel, who joined the team in their celebration post-game.

“Congratulations. That was an unbelievable game. Everyone that called me said, ‘I’m watching the hockey game,’” Trump continued. “I don’t know anybody that wasn’t. You’re going to be proud of that game for 50 years as you grow older. It was amazing. We love you guys, congratulations.”

Thanks in part to both the men’s and women’s hockey teams, the U.S. picked up 12 golds and 33 medals overall in the Games.

Things were a bit more up and down for Canada, which ranked 11th amongst all countries with five gold medals, while winning 21 in total. For many, it’s going to take some time to digest the fact that they weren’t able to come out on top on either side of the hockey category.
