Celtic have acted and decided to appeal Auston Trusty’s red card against Hibernian.

Michael Stewart isn’t surprised by Celtic’s appeal, and he ‘totally understands it’ after officials came under fire for several of their decisions this past weekend.

Trusty’s red card proved to be game-changing because, at the point of his sending off, the scores were level, before Kai Andrews fired home Hibs’ winner three minutes from time.

Either way, Celtic think their player was ‘wrongfully’ dismissed against David Gray’s side, and Stewart is backing Martin O’Neill’s side.

John McGinn wants it gone. Do you agree?

The issue Stewart has with Trusty’s red card is that it sets the bar ‘so low’ for sending offs, and he thinks it ruins the spectacle for everyone involved.

Speaking on Premier Sports, Stewart stated that there was ‘no shock’ in Celtic looking to overturn the red, with the American set to miss the trip to Ibrox and Pittodrie in the coming weeks.

Darrell Currie: “Also seen tonight, Celtic have appealed the Auston Trusty red card from the weekend.”

Stewart: “No shock. See the King one (sending off for St Mirren against Motherwell). See if that doesn’t happen on Saturday night, Auston Trusty doesn’t get sent off against Hibernian.

“This is the ridiculous situation we are in.”

Currie: “What do you make of Celtic’s appeal then, Michael?”

Stewart: “I totally understand it. It’s a lot more violent than King’s one. But is that where we are? Is that the bar for a sending off? He has hit his arm. Just have a word with him. You can’t do that, yellow card. Get on with the game. We are in a position where the bar is so low for getting players sent off.

“As I said to you before, boys are losing their place in the team. Missing out on appearance money. They are missing bonuses. The team is suffering. Punters are suffering because they don’t want to see players getting sent off.”

What have Celtic said regarding Trusty’s red card appeal?

On Monday evening, Celtic released a statement on social media confirming that they will appeal Trusty’s red card.

Remember, in January, Trusty was sent off at Hearts after fouling the last man; that red was also appealed, but the Hoops failed in their attempts to get it overturned.

But this time, Celtic are hoping for some luck. This is how their statement read out:

Celtic FC can confirm that we will be submitting an appeal to the SFA in relation to the red imposed on Auston Trusty during yesterday’s match. The Club believes that the player was wrongfully dismissed and that the decision was reached following VAR intervention. pic.twitter.com/cKDQGhDG0k
