We have arrested two men and laid charges after our patrol officers interrupted a violent assault and kidnapping in downtown Calgary.
Just before midnight on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026, a patrol sergeant working downtown observed three men assaulting a person near the intersection of First Street and 19 Avenue S.W. The officer challenged the three men, who entered a Toyota Camry and fled the scene. The victim, a man in his 20s, was transported to hospital in stable condition and has since been released.
Officers located the suspect’s vehicle a short time later and deployed a tire deflation device, bringing the vehicle to a stop. Two men attempted to flee the vehicle on foot but were taken into custody by patrol officers and the Canine Unit.
It is believed that this was a targeted incident and related to organized crime conflict in Calgary. Search warrants were executed on multiple vehicles resulting in the seizure of 89 grams of substances believed to be powder and crack cocaine, with a total street value of $5,000.
At the time of their arrest, one of the men was wanted on 40 outstanding warrants.
Bidong Bang TENY WANG, 23, of Calgary, has been charged with one count each of kidnapping, assault, possession for the purpose of trafficking and obstructing a peace officer. He will next appear in court on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026.
Rick GATWECH, 22, of Calgary, has been charged with one count each of kidnapping, assault, possession for the purpose of trafficking and obstructing a peace officer, as well as two counts of failing to comply with a release order. GATWECH was also arrested on 40 outstanding warrants and will next appear in court on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026.
“Our patrol officers did an exceptional job intervening quickly to prevent further harm to the victim and safely take the suspects into custody,” says Staff Sergeant Don Campbell of the CPS Organized Crime Unit. “Targeted or not, this kind of brazen violence has no place on our streets.”
