Halton police have arrested and charged a longtime Hamilton police officer in connection with an investigation involving child sexual abuse and exploitation material offences.

Police said David Hamilton, 43, of Burlington, was arrested on Feb. 25 and charged with one count each of possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material, and transmitting child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing in Milton.

Investigators said the offences are alleged to have occurred in Burlington between Jan. 3 and 4 of this year.

“I can confirm the offences did not occur while the accused was engaged in any duties as it relates to his employment with Hamilton (Police Service),” Halton police spokesperson Const. Jeff Dillon said in an email to CP24.

In a statement, the Hamilton Police Service said Hamilton was a constable who had been a member of the service for 19 years and affiliated with the “ProAction Cops & Kids” program.

They add that he has been suspended without pay.
