A skier is unresponsive after being rescued and transported to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in life-threatening condition following reports of an avalanche west of Calgary, Friday afternoon.

Cochrane RCMP and other emergency services responded to a call from the Nakiska ski hill around 12:45 p.m.

According to an initial RCMP report, two skiers were swept up in the avalanche and buried, but one was able to dig themselves out of the snow uninjured.

The other skier was eventually located unresponsive by first responders before being transported to the Calgary hospital by ground ambulance. Calgary EMS said the person taken to hospital is a youth.

A Nakiska spokesperson said in a statement to CBC News, “Our hearts are with the family and friends of the individual.

“We are sending our deepest care to the family dealing with this horrible situation. In these difficult times, our entire mountain community shares in your grief and sorrow.”

The spokesperson noted that a full investigation is ongoing.
