Tyler Myers is still a member of the Vancouver Canucks, but for how much longer?

The 36-year-old defenceman is contemplating his future, per reports, as a trade with the Detroit Red Wings is in limbo. Myers has known about the Detroit offer since Tuesday morning, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

The Red Wings have offered the Canucks a second-round pick for Myers, according to multiple reports. And while Myers hasn’t waived his no-movement clause to allow the deal to go through, he hasn’t yet made up his mind.

“He’s taking his time, which tells you he’s seriously considering it,” said Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal on Friday’s edition of Donnie and Dhali. “He hasn’t said no right away.”

Dhaliwal confirmed that “family reasons,” as many people have assumed, are playing a factor in Myers’ decision.

The Red Wings currently hold the third-best record in the Eastern Conference, with a seven-point cushion on a playoff spot. So they have that working for them.

But Detroit isn’t close to B.C., where Myers’ family is well established. The Red Wings also aren’t widely viewed as a legitimate Stanley Cup contender.

Dhaliwal said on Friday that he believes Myers would waive his no-movement clause for a trade to the Dallas Stars, given the Houston-born blueliner’s ties to Texas. The Stars are currently one of the favourites to win the Stanley Cup, but we don’t yet know what they’ve offered.

The Stars would have an easy time adding Myers’ $3-million cap hit to their roster, given the news that Tyler Seguin will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL. As such, they’ll get cap relief on his $9.85-million AAV salary.

The Colorado Avalanche are another team that has been linked to the 6-foot-8 blueliner. They’re another contending team with enough cap space to add Myers with relative ease.

Myers is in the second year of a three-year contract with a no-movement clause that converts to a modified no-trade clause (12-team list according to PuckPedia) on July 1.

He could block the Detroit deal and wait to see if a more favourable team steps up before next week’s March 6 trade deadline. Nobody should blame Myers for blocking a trade, but it does seem like a matter of when, not if, he gets dealt. And if this drags out until the summer, Myers will have much less say in where he ends up.
