New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Saturday said U.S. and Israel’s strikes on Iran “mark a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression.”
“Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Opening a new theater of war. Americans do not want this. They do not want another war in pursuit of regime change. They want relief from the affordability crisis. They want peace,” he added.

The U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Iran on Saturday, with President Donald Trump calling on Iranian citizens to “seize control of your destiny” by fighting against the country’s leadership.
Locations across Iran, including the capital city of Tehran, were targeted in the strikes. Iran has also begun retaliatory strikes on Israel and U.S. military bases around the Middle East.
Mamdani said the NYPD will increase patrols around “sensitive locations” because of the escalating conflict.
State police will also increase their presence at religious, cultural, and diplomatic sites, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul.
“While there are no credible threats at this time, our top priority is keeping New Yorkers safe,” she wrote on X.
Tensions with Iran had been escalating over the past several weeks as the U.S. sought to negotiate a deal to constrain Iran’s nuclear program.
