US-Iran ‘war’ LIVE updates: How is a Supreme Leader chosen?
US-Iran ‘war’ LIVE updates: Under Iran’s constitution, the responsibility for appointing and overseeing the Supreme Leader rests with the 88-member Assembly of Experts, formally known as the Assembly of Experts (Majles-e Khobregan-e Rahbari). The Assembly’s constitutional mandate includes appointing, supervising and, if necessary, dismissing the Supreme Leader.

US-Iran ‘war’ LIVE updates: Who was Ayatollah Ali Khamenei?
US-Iran ‘war’ LIVE updates: Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was a senior cleric who rose to prominence from the religious, anti-imperialist movement that led Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.
A key figure in the establishment of the Islamic Republic, he later became the country’s supreme leader, consolidating authority over Iran’s political, military and religious institutions.
Recognisable by his white beard, clerical robes and black turban, Khamenei cultivated the image of an austere patriarch. An unsmiling and deeply ideological figure, he never left Iran after assuming office, instead ruling from within the country’s tightly controlled power structure.
During his tenure, he used his authority to quell protests challenging both his leadership and the Islamic system he helped build. His hardline stance on women’s rights and civil liberties, and his uncompromising response to dissent, reinforced his reputation as a leader determined to preserve the system at all costs.
His whereabouts often remained unclear, even during periods of deadly crackdowns and nationwide unrest. Reports frequently claimed that he was operating from a bunker or in hiding, surrounded by loyalists, though such accounts were rarely officially confirmed.
