Armed police have locked down an Edinburgh neighbourhood amid reports of a man with knives.

Emergency crews, including firearms officers, were deployed to the Calder area of the Scottish capital on Monday morning.

The incident remains ongoing, with members of the public urged to avoid the area.

Two people were injured, police have said.

Footage showed a man appearing to be carrying two knives near the scene.

Police Scotland Chief Inspector Scott Kennedy said the “disturbance” has been contained and there is not believed to be a wider risk to the public.

Police are not treating the incident as terror-related, he added.

CI Kennedy said: “Officers were called to reports of a man with a bladed weapon on Calder Gardens around 8.25am.

“Specialist resources, including firearms officers, are in attendance at a property nearby and enquiries are ongoing.

“Two people were injured and taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service has confirmed it transported two people to hospital.

Nearby schools and early years centres have been closed to the public on police advice, Edinburgh Council has said.

A spokesperson said the council was “aware of the ongoing incident” and was supporting police.

“Following police advice, all council buildings nearby, including schools and early years centres, were closed to the public,” they said.

“We’re hoping to be able to reopen these shortly and are continuing to keep parents and local residents updated.

Earlier, a statement from Police Scotland said: “The public is being advised to avoid the Calder area of Edinburgh following reports of a man with a bladed weapon.

“Police, including firearms officers, are in attendance.”
