The F-35 planes operate out of RAF Marham in west Norfolk.

It was confirmed by the Ministry of Defence this evening that the move came in defence of Jordan.

This marks the first time the Royal Air Force’s fifth-generation stealth fighter jets, UK F-35s, have destroyed a target on operations

RAF Marham is regarded as “the home of the F35” by the official website of the force.

Six jets from the base flew over to Cyprus last week.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: “These operations form part of the UK’s broader commitment to regional security and an active commitment to protect our personnel and allies.”

Defence Minister John Healey took to social media to congratulate the RAF on the successful defensive operation.

The minister said: “We’re moving quickly to further reinforce our defensive presence in the Eastern Mediterranean.

“I am deeply proud of the professionalism & bravery of our Armed Forces personnel who have in recent days, successfully taken action to protect our allies and defend British interests.”
